Entering the dungeon, you can feel piercing fear and chilling cold ... The groans of the condemned and the sound of knocked out metal chains remind you that the Castle in Chęciny is not only a place for court ladies and knights.

For some time there was a state prison for important political prisoners, but there was also place for less significant people. The municipal court in the Castle, which had more and more powers since the 15th century, performed the function of the local judiciary. It happened that a person convicted of various crimes served the sentence of the "lower tower" for crimes of greater importance, staying in it for even several months.

The conditions in which he stayed were unenviable - dirt, cold or damp, and the company of insects and rodents threatened not only with loss of health, but also serious complications leading to the death of the penitent. As you can see - the bones lying on the ground indicate that the convict, from the moment he entered the dungeon, had no opportunity to see the sun's rays again ... It also happened that the court sentenced the delinquent to the death penalty - interestingly, depending on which social status he belonged, he had a different punishment tool. A sword was intended for the nobility, and a large ax for the lower-born.
